Valencia is a city full of life, culture, and stunning architecture, but summer heatwaves can make exploring a challenge if not planned correctly. When temperatures soar, it’s easy to feel stuck indoors or miss out on the best experiences. Fortunately, Valencia offers plenty of ways to stay cool while still enjoying everything this vibrant city has to offer. Whether you want to relax by the water, explore shaded parks, or savor refreshing local treats, there are smart ways to beat the heat and make the most of your visit.
Here are the top 12 Best Valencian Summer Activities.
1. Visit the City of Arts and Sciences Early or Late
The City of Arts and Sciences is one of Valencia’s most iconic landmarks. During heatwaves, avoid the midday sun by visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The complex offers plenty of shaded areas and indoor attractions like the Oceanogràfic aquarium, where you can admire marine life in cool, air-conditioned spaces. The Hemisfèric cinema also provides a break from the heat with its immersive shows.
Plan your visit around cooler hours to enjoy the exterior architecture and exhibits without overheating.
2. Spend Time at Patacona Beach with a Parasol
Valencia’s Malvarrosa Beach is perfect for cooling off in the Mediterranean Sea. Rent a bed and a parasol from a beach bar (or take a towel and parasol that we provide) to protect yourself from direct sunlight and the high UV rays. The sea breeze helps keep the temperature down, and taking a dip in the water is one of the best ways to refresh during a heatwave.
Bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and enjoy a leisurely day by the shore.
3. Explore the Turia Gardens in the Morning
The Turia Gardens stretch across the city in a former riverbed, offering a green oasis with shaded paths, fountains, and playgrounds. Early morning or later evening walks here are peaceful and cooler before the sun climbs high. You can also rent a bike or rollerblade along the paths to stay active without overheating.
The gardens have many spots to rest in the shade or near water features, making them ideal for a heatwave-friendly outing. Take a book, a picnic and enjoy a siesta al fresco (just be careful of your belongings if sleeping!)
4. Enjoy a Traditional Horchata in a Local Café
Horchata is a refreshing Valencian drink made from tiger nuts, served cold and perfect for hot days. Many local cafés and horchaterías offer this sweet, milky beverage alongside fresh pastries like fartons. It’s a delicious way to cool down and experience a local tradition.
Try Horchatería Santa Catalina or Horchatería Daniel for authentic horchata in charming settings.
5. Take a Sunset Boat Ride in Albufera Natural Park
Just a short drive from Valencia, Albufera Natural Park offers a peaceful escape from the city heat. The park’s freshwater lagoon stays cooler than urban areas, and boat rides provide shade and a gentle breeze. Pick up ingredients for a picnic or enjoy a light meal at one of the market’s small eateries.
